Clip of the Week: February 7, 2024

They say love is blind, but try telling that to the millions of single (and not-so-single) people on dating apps. In an era when getting a date for Valentine’s Day or any other day is purportedly easier than ever with thousands of potential partners at our fingertips, it can all feel a little superficial.
Back in the good ol’ days, did people look for more substance than style? Was a mental, emotional, intellectual connection more important than a physical one?
Spoiler alert: Nah. It turns out it was always about the photos.
A wealthy and handsome young man of Berlin recently had his photograph taken, and as it proved to be a particularly artistic production the photographer obtained permission to exhibit it in his show case.
Hearing soon afterwards that his photograph was hanging next to that of a very pretty girl, the young man had the curiosity to pass the studio and saw himself placed side by side with the young lady. Struck with the beauty of his partner in the show case, he asked her name, and her father proved to be a wealthy lawyer.
Means were found to bring the young couple together, and soon afterwards their engagement was announced.
– The Hawera & Normanby Star, October 16, 1906
To be fair to this young couple, it might not be all about looks—having a rich parent helps.
For the wife’s sake, I just hope the man’s name was something other than Dorian Gray.

The photographer was pretty damned clever.
He not only got the wedding photo shoot business, but he also gathered intel for his brother the divorce lawyer. Win/win.
Genius! To say nothing of his fees for photographing the inevitable kids and for his sister, their family therapist, before during and after divorce proceedings. Their parents raised the siblings right!
