Clip of the Week: September 21, 2022

Kevin Bacon—er, Ren McCormack—might have a thing or two to say about this:
No new dances will be introduced during 1931, according to the decision of the dance hall managers’ official board of control of ballroom dancing, London. Santos Casani, a leading manager has announced that he is concentrating on popularizing the waltz tango, and is specifically featuring the Viennese waltz. Freak dancing will not be allowed in English ball-rooms.
– The Bay of Plenty Times, July 25, 1931
When will hoity-toity dance teachers, admittedly fictional small-town reverends and other stalwarts of society learn: banning dances never works. Just ask the corrupter “of all humanity” otherwise known as “the tango.”
Santos should count himself lucky he was dealing with the 1930s version of freak dancing and not its 21st-century successor.

“Last Tango In London” just doesn’t have the same ring.
😂 Agreed, sounds like a Hollywood producer-mandated sequel!
