Doh, I knew I was forgetting to pack something. Fortunately for me, I’m in good hands, er, paws on my weekend jaunt with the Valencian Lassie.

The sagacity of a dog has brought to justice a man now awaiting execution for murder in Valencia goal.
The owner of the dog was killed in a sudden quarrel, and his body was secretly buried by the murderer and his confederates. The dog witnessed the crime and the burial, and succeeded in escaping from the criminals.
The animal returned to the master’s house, and by barking and running to the door induced the dead man’s son to follow. The dog made its way straight to the grave and began scratching up the earth. The police were called, and the body unearthed.
The dog was still unsatisfied, and led the way, following a scent apparently, to a café in the town, where it sprang at the throat of a man seated at the table. The man was arrested, and confessed to the murder of the dog’s owner.
– The Wairarapa Daily Times, October 15, 1906

Dog detectives are nothing new, and judging by this blog’s admittedly selective sample, their homicide clearance rate is 100%. Maybe it’s time for them to fetch white-collar criminals too:
An extraordinary case has just concluded at Valencia. Don José Galindo, Mayor of Alba, was arraigned before the provincial tribunal for falsifying public documents, and forgery, the indictment comprising no fewer than 217 charges, each of which set forth that the offence was punishable by 14 years’ imprisonment. Don José was convicted, and condemned to a total of 3,038 years’ imprisonment.
– The Pontypridd Chronicle, July 21, 1893
By my math, Don José is still serving out his sentence – Lassie and I will be sure to pay him a visit on our way home from the beach.
