How Old Is Too Old?
On July 24, 2024 by ElyseThe United States appears to have settled the question of “how old is too old to run for president,” but what about “how old is too old to vote?”
Mrs. Lydia A. Sharpless of Whittier, Cal., 104 years old, is the oldest woman voter in the United States. She was the first woman to register in California and is the oldest voter in the state. Mrs. Sharpless has three children, thirteen grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Her oldest boy is 77 and her daughter 72.
The father of this centurian died at 101, had 66 great grandchildren and his first vote was cast for George Washington.
Mrs. Sharpless attributes her long life to natural strength, a simple life and the beautiful climate of California. Her great ambition is to live to be 110 years old, and she expects to see great-great-grandchildren.
– The Day Book, November 16, 1914
Hint hint to any great-grandchildren reading. . .
She may not have voted for George Washington, but she could claim to have “seen all but two of the [United States] presidents come and go.” Those are bragging rights up there with those of “aged adventurers” Abner and Mary Hammond, who’s cross-country trek made the news just a couple years earlier.

A couple years later, she expanded on her philosophy for a long life with 10 commandments:
I—Thou shalt not worry.
II—Be calm under trial.
III—Husband thy health.
IV—Employ thy time industriously. [Editor’s note: apologies to anyone reading and thus already violating this particular commandment.]
V—Eat whatever agrees with thee.
VI—Sleep eight hours.
VII—Be honorable in all thy dealings.
VIII—Attend church regularly.
IX—Be temperate in all thy habits.
X—Keep thy soul serene.
– The Carson City Daily Appeal, August 26, 1916
As another American election approaches, several of these pearls of wisdom are hitting home, especially #5, which I’m interpreting as permission to stress eat. May these updated 10 commandment justify whatever self-care routine you need over the next few months!

Wow! Ten more commandments I can break!
😂🤣 Who wants to be 103 anyway? She certainly doesn’t seem like she’s having much fun.
